Hi Bill,
I believe this John MAY have gone West to mine for gold with my gr. grandfather. John is listed twice--once Dec. 13 and once December 16 in the Beardstown, Cass Co., Illinois census of 1850--right along with my gr. grandfather (once listed as Lewis Baney--once listed as Lewis Barney). The original German spelling of our name was Böhne/Boehne.
It appears to be some kind of census error-they were repeated for some reason. I think they moved in between dates--maybe to get ready to go west. It looks that way anyway--particularly when you look at their worth. Quite possible somebody else was giving information on one of the days.
John Couch is listed on December 13 as a livery man--age 25 from England--married within the year--but no wife is there.
John Couch is listed 3 days later as age 24--stable keeper--from Germany. On this date he and my gr. grandfather are living with Johanna Couch, age 64--German--no occupation listed. John is not listed as married within the year.
I think the German place of origin is more likely correct--quite possibly the original spelling was Koch. My gr. grandfather was German.
Other names close by Craig and Ross.
